Plant Operations

The operations of our plant start where the resource is, in the field.  We currently conducted harvesting operations on less than half of our permitted 320 acres.   We only “open” the amount of field necessary to conduct operations.  During the summer months, the peat is air-dried as much as possible to ease the burden on the drying process. This air-dried peat is collected and brought up to our production facility, less than a mile away.

The peat is then dried to a target moisture content in a dryer that utilizes heat produced through the gasification of biomass.  After this initial drying step, the peat is screened and finely ground limestone is added to the product to adjust the pH closer to neutral. The peat is then pelletized, which redistributes the natural resins and waxes in the peat, forming a unified pellet. After a secondary drying step, the peat goes through a crushing and screening operation.  This screened product is our granular bioAPT product.  The fines collected after the screening step are available coarse (-30 mesh) or ground in a ball mill (85% through 200 mesh).

The granular product can be further processed into the APTsorb product through a patent pending heat treatment process, which produces a hard, porous granular product, used in the adsorption of dissolved heavy metals.

As part of these operations, there are many quality control measures in place to ensure a consistent and quality product.  From the mixing of the peat before it enters the plant, to verifying pH, moisture content, and particle size, we are actively monitoring the quality of our products.

Our 16 full time employees and 3 part time employees do all of these operations. For a tour of our facility, contact a member of the management team.  We would be more than happy to show you our operation.
